Bike helmets are not one-size-fits-all. Pick one that fits your head properly and provides the level of protection you need for the type of bike or e-bike you are riding. E-bikes require a more substantial helmet than your typical bike helmet.

Nothing beats the excitement of riding a bike. Whether kids are pedaling around the

neighborhood, heading to a friend's house, or riding an e-bike with family; cycling is a

fun way to stay active and build confidence. But every ride should begin with one

essential habit: putting on a properly fitted helmet.

Why Helmets Are So Important

A helmet is the single most effective piece of safety equipment a child can wear while

riding a bike. Falls and crashes can happen unexpectedly, even on familiar streets or

sidewalks. A well-fitted helmet helps protect the head by reducing the force of an

impact, lowering the risk of serious injury.

Make helmet use a non-negotiable family rule. Children are more likely to wear a helmet

consistently when they see parents and other adults doing the same.

Getting the Right Helmet Fit

A helmet only works well if it fits correctly. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Choose a helmet designed for bicycling that meets current safety standards.

Look for a helmet labeled with a “CPSC” (Consumer Product Safety

    Commission) certification.

  • Avoid using multisport or “skateboard” helmets unless they are also certified for

    bicycling with a “CPSC” label.

  • The helmet should sit level on the head, covering the forehead but sitting two

    finger’s width above the eyebrows.

  • The side straps should form a "V" just below each ear.

  • The chin strap should be snug enough that only one or two fingers fit between

    the strap and the chin.

  • Replace any helmet that has been involved in a significant crash or shows signs

    of damage.

Taking a few extra minutes to adjust a helmet can make a meaningful difference in its

effectiveness.

What Parents Should Know About E-Bikes

E-bikes have become increasingly popular because they make riding easier and allow

families to travel longer distances. However, they also introduce additional safety

considerations.

Since e-bikes can travel at higher speeds than traditional bicycles, crashes may occur

with greater force. That makes wearing the correct helmet type and properly fitting it

important.

Before allowing a child to ride an e-bike:

  • Make sure they have strong basic bicycle handling skills. An e-bike is a stronger,

faster bike. If your child cannot safely ride a basic bicycle, they will not be able to

    safely ride an e-bike.

  • Start with the lowest assistance setting until they are comfortable. E-bikes are not

recommended for any children under age 12. Class 3 e-bikes (the most powerful)

are restricted to riders over the age of 16 in Ohio.

  • Teach children to brake earlier and leave extra space between themselves and

    other riders, pedestrians, or vehicles.

  • Wear an appropriate helmet; a traditional bike helmet is not made to work at the

high speeds an e-bike can reach. Use a helmet labeled with an “ASTM F1952,”

“NTA 8776,” or “DOT” safety certification.

Parents should also choose an e-bike that matches the rider's size and ability. A bike

that is too large or too powerful can be more difficult to control.

Safe Riding Habits Every Child Should Learn

A helmet is only one part of staying safe. Encourage kids to develop smart riding habits

every time they ride:

  • Obey traffic signs and signals – ride on the right with traffic.

  • Ride in predictable, straight lines.

  • Watch carefully for cars entering driveways and intersections.

  • Stay alert and avoid distractions such as phones or headphones.

  • Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially when visibility is limited.

  • Use front and rear lights at minimum when riding in dim or dark conditions,

including dawn, dusk, nighttime, and inclement weather.

Practicing these habits regularly helps children become more confident and responsible

riders.

Make Safety Part of the Fun

Bike safety doesn't have to feel like a chore. Let children choose a helmet in their

favorite color or design (or decorate a plain helmet with stickers!), practice riding skills

together, and celebrate safe habits. Positive role-modeling is essential! Adults need to

demonstrate safe riding habits to emphasize the importance of helmets and following

traffic laws for everyone, regardless of age.

Whether your child rides a traditional bicycle or an e-bike, the goal is the same: enjoy

every ride while staying as safe as possible. A properly fitted helmet, smart riding

habits, and age-appropriate supervision can help ensure that every adventure ends with

happy memories and a safe trip home.
